ten years
Look what we were doing ten years ago today!

And here we are a decade later... maybe older and wiser. Well, a little older for sure.

As I've been reflecting on 5 years in Zurich as of this summer and what that anniversary means, our 10 year anniversary almost snuck up on me. A decade has passed so quickly. At the same time, I can hardly imagine my life without Tim, so in many ways it feels like we have packed in so much life together in 10 years.
And we have.
Tim wrote me a letter on our 10th that I think I can truly say is the best letter I have ever received. I've received a lot of written letters from him over the years -- especially twelve years ago when I spent most of the year in France -- but even since then he has written me many a letter for the special occasions in our lives. But I can't recall a letter that had me in tears again and again, thought after thought. And I don't think I can blame it on PMS either. It was just a very reflective, generous, moving letter. Because it captured so much of our 10 years together (on just two pages!), I'm inclined to give you a few glimpses...
Tim (Mr. Details) reminded me that in 10 years, we have lived together for 3653 days, paddled over 100 km in the same canoe and driven at least 200,000 km -- maybe over a quarter million km -- together. That we've traveled to 7 different countries together so far, and visited many more in our kitchen. Ten years has also brought 3 homes, 3 churches and too many dear friends to count. Friends who we have shaped and who have shaped us. And in the last four of those years, we have also been blessed with 2 beautiful girls -- the best gifts we have received in this life.
He reminded me that we have worked hard, played hard, trained hard and served hard over the years. That we have come to know each other better than any other person knows us. (Of course, God will always be the exception to that!) That we have been blessed with a beautiful home together. I love his words about 'home':
As thought that weren't enough, Tim came home with flowers for me on our anniversary. Ten flowers -- each one with a unique meaning. The note on the envelope reads "...for the girl whose apartment I used to fill with flowers".

Tim loves a good surprise, so I decided to make the dinner reservation this time, and wouldn't tell where. We went to the Red Pump in Bayfield -- a sort of once-a-decade kind of restaurant visit for us. It was so memorable. We ended up being served by a friend (the lovely Pam) , who tipped the chef off about our anniversary. In turn, we were spoiled by exquisite surprise appetizers and an unforgettably yummy dessert with two candles. Speaking of surprises, we were both completely stunned to be so spoiled!

So... to the man I exchanged rings with ten years ago.... happy anniversary. Thank you for so much life -- and such rich life -- together. For the steadiness of your love through the ordinary and the extraordinary days... through the celebrations, disappointments, the laughter, the pain and the joys of life. I am so glad that the next chapter of life, whatever it brings, will be with you, my husband and my best friend.

"Home with you means so much. It is where we rest, where we are ourselves. It is the place our shared values have created, where we are fully known. It is the place we most and best know grace. And the love of Jesus Christ. So true. I won't quote much more of the letter, but I have to share this lovely thought:
"I never knew how intimate, how wonderful it would be to get to listen to the song of your life as I live and walk with you."Isn't that lovely?
